Independent Testing

Heat reflective coatings are categorized as thermally regulated paints and require a unique set of laboratory tests to be conducted on them to verify their performance and obtain specific values that define their ability to reflect solar induced heat.

Testing is done to internationally recognised reflectivity standards as listed below and when comparing different heat reflective coatings the manufacturer must be able to supply an individual test on each colour in each product they supply.  For the test data to be credible the tests must be performed by a reputable external test laboratory.

In addition, the products tested must have third party independent accreditation that insures the manufacturing facility maintains the reflectivity values stated.  Australian manufacturers require CodeMark Certification.

  • ASTM C 1371-04,  “Determination of Emittance of Materials Near Room Temperature”

  • ASTM E 1980-01, “Standard Test Method for determining Solar Absorbance Values”.

  • ASTM C 1549-02, “Standard Test Method for Determination of Solar Reflectance Near Ambient Temperature Using a Portable Solar Reflectometer.”

  • ASTM E 903-96, “Standard Test Method for Solar Absorbance, Reflectance, and Transmittance of Materials Using Integrating Spheres.”

  • ASTM E 1980-01, “Standard Test Method for determining Solar Reflectance Index”.
